“Mullaghmore via Glenshane Forest - 4th April 2009”

This was the first recce by Ian, John, Ken, Monica and Stephen to produce some walks and route cards that we have not seen on the existing club walks and assist us develop our skills.

Ian led this walk starting at Grid C777044 (parking for around 5 cars) - entrance to Glenshane forest. The first stage of the walk is around four kilometres of reasonably smooth ascending forest track, terminating at the Glenshane Mass rock and forest edge. A short (steep) walk follows to the top of Bohilbreaga (1568ft) over typical Sperrins bog. From the top of Bohilbreaga the communications mast at Mullaghmore (1804ft) is clearly seen in the distance and this section can be challenging due to the bog and peat hags. A rocky outcrop on the left side of Mullaghmore is sheltered and ideal for a lunch stop with stunning views.

Moving from Mullaghmore to White Mountain (1762ft) is via a short section of tarmac track cutting off to the right and following the fence to the summit. From White Mountain it’s a straight but challenging walk down to the forest edge keeping to the left of Glenshane Mountain to avoid hags and bad ground. A short descent from the hillside down into the forest following the Rough Burn River meets the forest track and exits out via a circular route.

Overall distance – just short of 10 miles - Thanks to John, Ken, Monica and Stephen for the support!
