A blog about some really random stuff...

New Server and Weather Station

My new server, a Dell Optiplex 745 is now up and running. I got it brand new and fitted 2gb or RAM and a 80gb HD. Its running so much better than the old server and has so much more power, which therefore will let me do more power-intensive things like streaming, video conversion, etc. The only problem is that the server rack now gets much warmer (21-22oC) rather than the usual 15oC. For this, i've had to increase fan speed which is pretty noisy! Its fine for now, but i may invest in better cooling in the future. Anyhoo, along with this server arrival, I decided to give my weather station project another go, and finally got it online! I found software called "Cumulus" by SandaySoft. This is a perfect application that lets me upload to FTP, Weather Underground, PWS and Twitter! (Follow @DerryWX to see the hourly updates) The site is here - it looks pretty basic at the moment but I hope to update it with a new design when I get some time soon. Look for "LDERRYL2" on Weather Underground or "LDERRY" on PWS Weather for logs and data.

Windfyre re-birth?!

So after the more and more frequent downtime of the Windfyre Network and the staff split-up, it seem that the network admin is planning a re-open. On the "the downtime network" blog, the admin has been leaving notes on what has been happening behind the scenes. He talks about the lack of funds and server downtime there. But, just recently (Jan 5th) he has announced that "Tentative schedule for re-birth is mid-February". Previously I had been following the blog, leaving comments and e-Mailing the Admin but with no response as to what is going on, that is, until I seen the recent post. I plan to provide a server and hosting for his website if all goes well, but I still have not received a response from him. So, fingers crossed for a reply!
P.S, I have had to disable comments on this blog and The Ghosts Of Errigal blog due to abuse by spammers. The comments should return once Captcha has been installed.

Omnitrix bot downtime.

As you may have noticed, Omnitrix has been disconnecting during the night or around 12:30PM daily. This issue has been resolved. It appears that the problem was the hibernate function in the power settings for the server was enabled. This meant that the server became unresponsive and all services went down. I will be testing the server over the course of the weekend, but it should be fine now. I've also added a parabolic wireless antenna to the server, so the connection should be much better!
